From Pickleball to Purpose

Everyone you meet will impact you in some way. Some are acquaintances who leave a fond memory after you part ways. Others are friends or mentors who play a big role in your life, even if the connection fades over time. And then there are the friendships that start casually—like a few evenings on the pickleball court—and evolve into something much deeper.
I met Bonnie Marquez a little more than two years ago when she temporarily moved to Nashville from Santa Clarita Valley (SCV), California. We first connected on the pickleball court. Soon, other women from SCV joined in, and before long, a dozen of us who hadn’t known each other back in California had formed a close-knit group— “SCV Ladies Take Nashville.”
When we learned that Bonnie’s son, Peyton, has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), we wanted to do something to help. Bonnie shared her dream of hosting a gala in Nashville, and of course, we said “yes.” In November 2024, Peyton’s Project Barrels of Strength held its first event at Leiper’s Fork Distillery, raising more than $30,000 for research and equipment for kids in need.
DMD is a devastating, progressive disease with no cure. Peyton was diagnosed at six and slowly began losing the use of his muscles. Now nineteen, he is confined to a wheelchair but continues to fight with courage and hope. Earlier this year, he participated in an experimental gene therapy trial that we hope will help preserve his muscle strength, heart, and lungs. Most boys with DMD don’t live past the age of 25.
Planning for our second gala began right away. Our small but mighty committee worked tirelessly to secure a venue, line up caterers, and gather auction items and sponsors. On September 5, 2025, the second annual Barrels of Strength gala filled the room with energy and love. Peyton’s parents, Bonnie and Ethan, shared powerful words, and when Peyton spoke, the audience rose to their feet. His courage fueled the live auction and inspired incredible generosity.
Together, we raised more than $35,000 for research and for families who need essential equipment like wheelchairs, ramps, and lifts—things often not covered by insurance.
I hope this story inspires you to reflect on the power of friendship in your own life. We never know when an incredible human will come into our circle. I’m grateful for every one of you reading this today—new friends, old friends, and those I’d walk across hot coals for.
Reach out to someone today, just to say hello. No agenda, just love and gratitude. And when you get the chance to help at a deeper level, take it—make that meal, drive that cancer patient to the hospital, babysit for a well-needed date night, or even help plan a gala. That’s the power of friendship—it multiplies when we put it into action.
